What is a Doula?
A ‘doula’ is a woman who is a slave or servant to another woman whilst she is in labour. The word ‘doula comes from the Greek word for the most important female in the greek household. Often referred to as a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth.
(Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the mother)
I prefer to describe a doula, as someone who ‘Mother’s the mother’.
I like to think of myself as a support person who provides a ‘continuity of care’ that begins well before the birth day, who bridges the gap between the medical staff and the couples needs and wants.
A Doula is a non-medically trained woman who provides continuous mental, physical and emotional, support to a woman and her partner throughout pregnancy, labour and after birth.
A Doula is often referred to as ‘The Missing link in Maternity Care’ offering support, informed choices and education about birth on a continuous basis through pregnancy and beyond birth.
Some of the topics to be covered will include:-
Each session will include practical based activity relaxation, question and answer time and a break for coffee/tea & lunch.
I know from attending births as a Doula over the last 20 years that the benefits of having a doula in attendance at your birth will assist to:Please note:
As a Doula I do not speak for you, or tell you what you should or should not do during your labour or birth. I am a guide to help you along your journey. It is your experience and you are responsible for any decisions you make and your birthing outcome. I can make suggestions and provide explanations about options relevant to any given situation, but it is not my role to tell you what you should do.
It is my role to assist you in every way possible can so that you enjoy your experience of labour and birth, and come through your journey feeling empowered and strong, mentally physically and emotionally.

Gaby’s book ‘A Labour of Love’ shaped my pregnancy and helped me to have an incredible birth experience. Although I did not have the opportunity to meet her in person during my pregnancy her passion and love for the birth world stayed with me long after my son was born. When I found out that Gaby offered a Doula Training Course there was no doubt that I was going to attend. I found the course to have the perfect balance of information, practical advice, emotional support and encouragement. Gaby’s beautiful friendly nature and passion for the birth world is infectious. She has used her years of extensive knowledge and experience to create an informative and comprehensive training course. Gaby’s intuitive and holistic approach to life comes through strongly in this course. She shares with you her innate wisdom of the Doula world whilst also supporting you to overcome any personal crisis of confidence. I completed her course feeling refreshed, empowered and confident to support woman in the gentle and loving way of a Doula.Claire, September 2015
